One Room Challenge: Week 5 | Cutting it Close!

Pearl St.

It’s week 5 of the One Room ChallengeHow are we down to 1 week until the final reveal?  Time is flying.

If you missed our week 1-4 posts, you can catch up here:

Week 1: Before Photos & Inspo

Week 2: Progress & Reno Plans

Week 3: Decor Plans (round 1)

Week 4: Trim, Paint & Decor Changes

PROGRESS

We’re definitely going to be pulling some many late nights between now and next week to get this project finished on time, but we’re so excited to start to see progress in here.  It’s hard to believe this is what our living and dining rooms used to look like.  The before & afters are going to be gooooood.

We installed more Metrie panel molding in the living room, which we lined up with the window height.  We love using panel molding in our projects because it never fails to elevate the space (and it’s affordable!).

We also caulked & painted {most of} the fireplace stone.  It took awhile because of all of the little cracks and uneven pieces.  We explained in our previous posts that we would have rather just removed the stone altogether & had a clean surface, but we didn’t think we’d have time to re-drywall the whole thing after breaking the plaster beneath it.  So, we left it & are rolling with it.

DELIVERIES

Other fun updates this week: deliveries!

That huge bottom box is part of a super comfy sofa from Lamps Plus, which comes in 3 separate modular pieces.  (sidenote: did you know they also sell furniture in addition to lighting? We didn’t!)  This sofa is large — each piece is about 44×44, so our plan is to join the two ends together, and then use the armless piece to make an L.  This sofa resembles Restoration Hardware’s Cloud sofa, but costs a fraction of the price.  We’ll report back to you once we have it all unpacked and get a chance to use it!!

Also in those boxes are our blue velvet accent chairs from Homepop and our new Legrand outlets and switches from Bellacor.  The outlets pop up, which is going to create a really clean look.

Our rug from Esalerugs also arrived.  It looks exactly like it did in the photos!

WHAT’S LEFT?

It was a good week, but there is still so. much. left. to do.  Here’s our current list:

  • Install Farrow & Ball wallpaper
  • Caulk all of our Metrie trim
  • Make & install our DIY hidden door
  • Have electricians install our lights & switches from Bellacor
  • Order dining table & chairs
  • Install our Tecwood floors from Mohawk (they’re scheduled to arrive today – fingers crossed!)
  • Install our Jeffrey Court tile on the fireplace hearth
  • Furnish, style, photograph!

It’s going to be a busy week, folks.  We’ll see you back here next week for the big reveal! In the meantime, follow us on Instagram (we post sneak peaks!) and be sure to check out the other bloggers’ progress here:

  10. I absolutely love the fire place and the rug! They are going to look great together! Good luck with the rest of the to-do list!

  11. Hello Catherine, I am grateful to have found your page about the rug. I like your Metrie molding. Thanks for the sharing such kind of informative article.

  12. Tracey says:

Hi Catherine! Wondering what you used to paint the ledger stone, and how it was done…..have an ugly fireplace that could use a paint job!

    • Catherine says:

We used Farrow & Ball eggshell paint — nothing fancy! We primed first and used a combo of a brush and roller to get the paint into all of the crevices. After we primed, we caulked all of the gaps to make the stone look cleaner white.

I grew up in New Jersey and always had a dream of living in New York.  There was something about the energy of the city that drew me inOur journey started unexpectedly in 2012, when we decided to make a big move from New York to Columbus. The glamour of climbing the corporate ladder was wearing off, and we knew that renting an expensive small apartment and dealing with crowded subways everyday was not going to work forever. We wanted to start creating something for ourselves, and although we didn’t know exactly what that something was, we knew NYC wasn’t the place for it.

We decided on Columbus because Bryan grew up here, and we were intrigued by all of the development going on in the downtown area at the time. We drove through many of the neighborhoods and admired the boarded up old houses, most of which were built in the early 1900s, and started dreaming about the things we could do here.

I'm Catherine, and I'm the founder of Beginning in the Middle.
